It will include a high-level ministerial segment. \nCOP 16 will be the first Biodiversity COP since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at COP 15 in December 2022 in Montreal\, Canada. \nThis event has the potential to be a historic COP for Indigenous Peoples and local communities. At COP16\, it is going to be decided the the adoption of the New Programe of Work for indigenous peoples and local communities for the next 10 years\, which would serve as a guide for governments in supporting the work of indigenous peoples as fundamental actors in the conservation of biological diversity. \nAt COP 16\, parties will be tasked with reviewing the state of implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Parties are also expected to show the alignment of their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) with the Framework. COP 16 will further develop the monitoring framework and advance resource mobilization for the Global Biodiversity Framework. Among other tasks\, COP 16 is also due to finalize and operationalize the multilateral mechanism on the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the use of digital sequence information on genetic resources.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR SERIES: TARGET 3 IMPLEMENTATION WITH A FOCUS ON INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES
DESCRIPTION:Webinar Series on Target 3 Implementation with a focus on Indigenous Peoples and local communities\n \nDATE: Thursday 19Th September 2024 \nTIME: 08:00 – 10:00 AM Montreal Time. \nMODALITY: ZOOM (registration required) \nLANGUAGE: English and Spanish. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nAbstract: \nThe Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) recognizes the important roles of Indigenous Peoples and local communities as custodians of biodiversity and partners in its conservation\, restoration\, and sustainable use. The Framework’s implementation must ensure that the rights\, knowledge\, including traditional knowledge associated with biodiversity\, innovations\, worldviews\, values\, and practices of indigenous peoples and local communities are respected\, documented\, and preserved with their free\, prior\, and informed consent\, including through their full and effective participation in decision-making. This is to be done in accordance with relevant national legislation and international instruments\, including the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and human rights law. Acknowledging their multi-aspect roles\, respecting their rights\, and recognizing Indigenous and Traditional Territories are paramount to implementing the KMGBF Target 3. \nAs part of its mandate to support its members in achieving Target 3\, and as part of the work that the coalition has been doing since 2021 with the Indigenous Peoples and local communities task force with the support of the International Indigenous Forum\,  the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (HAC for N&P) is organizing a technical webinar to provide a better understanding of that last segment of the target 3 “recognizing and respecting the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities\, including over their traditional territories” and guidance on how to integrate these aspects into countries’ 30×30 efforts and update their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). \nThe first part of the webinar will present the perspectives of some organizations working on the topic.  The second part will be dedicated to country cases and community-based experiences. \n  \nAgenda\, Presentations and Resources: Available soon

SUMMARY:IPLCs\, gender & Biodiversity Webinars
DESCRIPTION:The International Women Biodiversity Network\, the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB)\, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Conservation International (CI) within the Inclusive Conservation Initiative (ICI) are organizing a series of three webinars on Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities on Linkages between Gender and Biodiversity. How can a gender-responsive approach be included in project cycle to conserve biodiversity? \nThe series of webinars\, that are taking place on June 25\, 26 and 27\, 2024 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM Montreal time\, follows three objectives: \n\nStrengthen IPLC’s understanding on links between gender and biodiversity\nStrengthen IPLC’s understanding of how to include the gender-responsive approach in the project cycle including the theory of change\nStrengthen gender consideration in the IPLC’s organization policies\, particularly women and youth.\n\nThe outcomes of the webinars will contribute to the development of a virtual course for broader community of IPLCs organizations to contribute to the implementation of the ICI and the implementation of the KMGBF\, which promotes a gender-responsive approach including recognizing their equal rights and access to land and natural resources and their full\, equitable\, meaningful and informed participation and leadership at all levels of action\, engagement\, policy and decision-making related to biodiversity.. \nThe first session addressed basic concepts related to gender responsible approach. The second session will focus con how the gender responsible approach can be included in a project cycle and the third session will be on how the gender responsible approach can be included in IPLCs policies. \nInterpretation in English\, Spanish and French will be available. \nAbout the Inclusive Conservation Initiative (ICI) \nThe Inclusive Conservation Initiative (ICI)  is a project designed to support the leadership of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) in stewarding lands\, waters and natural resources. By combining substantial investments in specific locations with support to magnify local results through global capacity building\, policy influence and demonstration of large-scale impacts\, ICI will catalyze the transformational changes needed to secure and enhance support for the contributions of IPLCs to biodiversity and other global environmental benefits (GEBs). A part of the GEF-7 Programming Directions Strategy’s Biodiversity focal area\, ICI is built upon the principle that inclusive conservation requires that IPLCs are the main authors and implementers. At the same time\, the project does not aim to define the concept of inclusive conservation and recognizes that this is also determined by IPLCs. \nIPLCs\, gender & Biodiversity Webinars AGENDA \nWebinar 1: LINKS BETWEEN GENDER AND  BIODIVERSITY \nDATE: Tuesday 25 JUNE 2024 \nTIME: 9-11 AM (Montreal time) \nDURATION: 2 hours \n\n\n\nTime\nContent\nPanelists\n\n\n09:00 – 09:20\nSpiritual Ceremony\nNeida Delia Andi Arimuya\, Indigenous Spiritual leader.\n\n\n09:20-09:40\nWelcome to the webinar series by organizers\nMayte Gonzalez\, Head\, Human Rights in Conservation Team\, IUCN Lucy Mulenkei Co-Chair of IWBN\, Ramiro Batzin\, Co-chair of IIFB\n\n\n09:40-09:45\nIntroduction\, including objectives and agenda of the webinar series\nViviana Figueroa\, IWBN – IIFB\n\n\n09:45-10:00\nWhat is the concept of “gender-responsive approach”\, “gender equality”\, “gender from IPLCs perspective”\, “Biodiversity”\nAmelia Arreguin\, Coordinator of the CBD Women\n\n\n10:00-10:15\nDialogue on IPLCs views on the “gender-responsive approach”\nYeshing Upún\, IWBN\n\n\n10:15-10:25\nWhat’s the links between gender and biodiversity management?
