Alana Manchineri delivers the key highlights of the statement on Item #5 on behalf of the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity at the #SBI6

16 February 2026 – Rome, Italy

Thank you, Madam Chair,

The IIFB has uploaded its statement; however, we would like to highlight a few key points.

Indigenous and local community women are the guardians and transmitters of ancestral and traditional knowledge for the care and sustainability of biodiversity and our territories.

We note that only a minority of national targets comprehensively address the three elements of Target 23. This situation is particularly concerning for Indigenous women, who face structural barriers in accessing land, resources, and participation in decision-making spaces.

We urge Parties to ensure that financial mechanisms at both national and international levels are accessible and responsive to the priorities defined by Indigenous women themselves.

We call for the implementation of the Gender Action Plan to be carried out in accordance with Articles 8(j) and 10(c) of the Convention, as well as the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

We suggest that Parties specifically report in their national reports on progress and challenges related to women, including those from Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

The IIFB welcomes the recommendations contained in document CBD/SBI/6/5 and requests that they be maintained.
