These Guidelines provide a comprehensive framework to support Indigenous Peoples and local communities in leading, contributing to, and engaging with spatial planning processes related to biodiversity conservation, sustainable use, and restoration. Rooted in traditional knowledge systems, cultural practices, and customary governance, the Guidelines recognize and promote the integral role of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in shaping spatial plans that reflect their rights, priorities, and worldviews.
Developed in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and other international instruments, the Guidelines emphasize principles such as Free, Prior and Informed Consent, full and effective participation, and human rights-based approaches. They serve as a tool to ensure Indigenous Peoples and local communities’ territories, land, waters, coastal, and marine areas, are respected and included in biodiversity planning and decision-making at all levels.
