The International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) participated in the Regional Dialogues on National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans for Latin America, which took place from June 25 to 28, 2024, in Lima, Peru.
The meeting was organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment of Peru, with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Peru as host. Within the framework of the dialogue, representatives from 16 Latin American countries shared their progress in the update and implementation of their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), in accordance with the Kunming – Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).
On behalf of the IIFB were sisters Valeria Sanchez Flores and Hortensia Hidalgo – both members of the Network of Indigenous Women on Biodiversity – Latin America and the Caribbean (RMIB-LAC)-. They presented the efforts made by the IIFB on the implementation of the 23 goals of the KMGBF. In particular, they highlighted the contributions to goals 1, 3, 5, 9, 13, 21 and 22 on traditional knowledge, intercultural and intergenerational communication, strengthening of capacities and the full and effective participation of indigenous women and men, among other topics.
Additionally, they presented the experience on the organization of the certified course o the “Convention on Biological Diversity and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework for Indigenous Women and Youth of Latin America and the Caribbean”, which finalized in December 2023 with 113 indigenous youth leaders and women from 13 countries.
This course was organized in by RMIB-LAC and IIFB in collaboration with Tres de Febrero National University (UNTREF in Spanish) and the Julio Godio Institute for Work (IMT-UNTREF), with the support of Abya Yala Indigenous Forum (FIAY) and NiaTero.
One of the main outcomes of this course were the 62 advocacy plans on the update of NBSAPs to be implemented in the participating countries, 6 of which were awarded financial support for their implementation in Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Peru.
