Informal Dialogue on a new programme of work and institutional arrangements on Article 8(j) and other provisions of the Convention related to indigenous peoples and local communities

At the initiative of the governments of Canada and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, together with the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity, an informal dialogue to discuss the key outcomes of the twelfth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Intersessional Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions (WG8J-12), is being convened on 25 May 2024, from 10:00 to 16:30 in Nairobi, Kenya, at the margins of the fourth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI 4), at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya.

During the WG8J-12 held in Geneva last year, progress was made on a number of issues, in particular on elements and tasks of the proposed new programme of work on Article 8(j) and other provisions, and on possible options for institutional arrangements. Despite this significant progress, more exchanges among Parties and indigenous peoples and local communities are needed to foster further common understanding on the various issues under consideration. This informal dialogue aims to facilitate discussions and enhance understanding among Parties and indigenous peoples and local communities on these issues.

The dialogue webpage can be accessed through the following link: https://www.cbd.int/article/informal-dialogue-8j-nairobi-2024.

The dialogue is open to all participants registered to attend SBI 4. Those who wish to participate should inform the CBD Secretariat by completing the form available at:
https://forms.office.com/r/kNt5WPcdmd , no later than 15 May 2024 to allow enough time for necessary logistics and venue preparation.
The dialogue will be held in English, with informal interpretation in Spanish and French.
