Objectives, Outcomes and Topics
Objectives
The objective of the TRɄA World summit on traditional knowledge related to biodiversity was to increase the visibility of traditional knowledge associated with biodiversity and highlight the contributions of Indigenous Peoples and local communities to biodiversity conservation and climate action, to achieve the objectives of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) and the Paris Agreement. Especially to generate an informal dialogue between representatives of governments and Indigenous Peoples and local communities to contribute to consensus on the recommendations of the 12th Meeting of the Working Group on Article 8(j) of the Convention on Biological Diversity to be considered by COP16.
Specific objectives:
- Exchange knowledge and experiences on the contributions of traditional knowledge to biodiversity conservation and to address climate change.
- Raise awareness so that the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities are recognized, which in turn will contribute to the conservation and restoration of biodiversity and to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
- Develop recommendations for the national implementation of the KMGBF.
- Develop recommendations (general and textual) and strategies on the New Program of Work on Article 8j, as well as institutional arrangements, to be considered for adoption at CBD COP 16.
- Develop a recommendation for the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC-COP 29).
Expected Outcomes
- Official statement of the meeting
- A meeting report containing:
- Recommendations for national implementation of the KMGBF
- Recommendations (general and textual) and strategies on the new work program on Article 8j and institutional arrangements.
- Recommendation on Digital Sequential Information on Genetic Resources (DSI)
- Recommendations on the KMGBF monitoring framework
- Recommendations on the linkages between biodiversity and climate change (e.g., climate change mitigation and adaptation with biodiversity conservation measures).
- Recommendation for UNFCC-COP 29.
All results will be presented before and during the CBD-COP16, UNFCC-COP29 , and the IPBES plenary.
Topics
Contribution of Traditional Knowledge associated with biodiversity to biodiversity conservation, restoration, adaptation to climate change and mitigation of its effects.
The presentation of case studies demonstrating the role of traditional knowledge and local actions of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in biodiversity conservation and restoration actions that, in turn, contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
National implementation of the Global Framework for Biological Diversity Kunming Montreal
The KMGBF is being implemented at the national level through National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans. The Summit will facilitate the presentation of the experiences and aspirations of Indigenous Peoples and local communities on the national implementation of the KMGBF.
Global climate change balance sheet and its impact on biodiversity.
Ensure that traditional knowledge systems and participation are respected and reflected in both the results and the process. The recognition, protection, promotion and safeguarding of the rights and knowledge systems of Indigenous Peoples and local communities are fundamental requirements for all climate-related actions, policies and decisions.
Program of work on Article 8(J) and other provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity related to indigenous peoples and local communities until 2030.
The CBD adopted a Program of Work (PoW) on Article 8(J) in 2000 and currently, since 2017, the CBD is discussing a new PoW for Article 8(j), which should be aligned with the objectives and targets of the KMGBF. COP 16 is expected to adopt a new Work Program based on the outcomes of WG8J-12 to support the implementation of the KMGBF.
Options for Institutional Arrangements: A subsidiary body on Article 8(J)
The CBD is discussing three options for institutional arrangements for Article 8(j) and other provisions, which are: the creation of a subsidiary body on Article 8(j), the full integration of 8(j) into other CBD bodies, and the continuation of WG8J with an updated mandate.
