After the dialogues held during the TRɄA World Summit on Traditional Knowledge related to Biodiversity, which took place from August 26 to August 29 in Bogota, Colombia, a series of recommendations were made to the parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to be considered at the Sixteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP16), in October, 2024.
The Executive Summary Report of the TRɄA World Summit includes recommendations regarding the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the Subsidiary Body on Article 8(j), New Programme of Work on Article 8(j, and Synergies between the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Framework Convention on Climate Change. The summit was co-organized by the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB), the Mesa Permanente de Concertación con los Pueblos y Organizaciones Indígenas (MPC), the International Indigenous Women’s Biodiversity Network (IWBN) and the Colombian Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as partners.
TRɄA means territory for the Emberá. Territory is the harmonious and balanced connection with Mother Nature from which Indigenous Peoples build and weave their cultural identities, knowledge, wisdom and practices. At this summit, all voices unite as one, for the TRɄA, towards COP16.
A total of 195 participants attended the event, including 34 government representatives: 17 from Colombia, 1 from Costa Rica, 1 from Guatemala, 1 from Mexico, 1 from Fiji, 1 from South Africa, 4 from Germany, 2 from Sweden, 1 from Switzerland, 2 from Australia, 1 from Norway, and 1 from Finland. Also were participating representatives of organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) – Indigenous Peoples Unit, FAO-REDD+ Latin America and the Caribbean, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) – GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), IPBES Technical Support Unit on Indigenous and Local Knowledge, IPAG, Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Colombia, Facilitating Working Group (FWG) of the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform (LCIPP); the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) , the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and over a hundred (100) participants from Indigenous Peoples and local communities. The participation included representatives from the seven (7) geographic regions and 35 countries in total.
