Rome, 24 February 2025.- As the resumed session of the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16.2) commences tomorrow in Rome, more than 40 Indigenous Peoples and local communities´ leaders from all seven socio-cultural regions have gathered in a preparatory meeting today led by the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB).

The meeting aimed to consolidate perspectives and enhance coordination ahead of this important session. During this preparatory meeting, the IIFB reviewed the key agenda items for COP16.2, including:

The session in Rome, continuation of COP16 – Cali, will focus on finalizing key decisions, particularly regarding biodiversity finance, and the monitoring framework for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).

IIFB preparatory Caucus meetings will be held throughout COP16.2 to ensure IIFB’s central objective: ensure the full and effective participation of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in the development of financial mechanisms, monitoring frameworks, and benefit-sharing arrangements.

“We are confident that the deliberations in Rome offer a critical opportunity to advance shared goals and to reinforce the central role, rights and contributions of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in the stewardship of biodiversity”, said Ramiro Batzin, IIFB co-chair.

Along with the preparatory meetings, IIFB will actively engage in the process with informal meetings with parties, bilateral meetings with organization and participating in the plenary sessions.
