This side event presented the outcomes of the TRɄA World Summit on Traditional Knowledge Related to Biodiversity, an event that gathered more than 150 representatives of governments and Indigenous Peoples and local communities from 7 socio-cultural regions for an informal dialogue, from the 26 to 29 August 2024, in Bogota, Colombia, in preparation for COP 16.
The objective of the TRɄA World Summit was to increase visibility of traditional knowledge related to biodiversity and to highlight Indigenous Peoples and local communities’ contributions to nature conservation and climate action, to achieve the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) and the Paris Agreement.
As a result of the TRɄA World Summit, a series of recommendations were developed to be considered at COP 16, including the adoption of a permanent Subsidiary Body on Article 8j (SB8j) and the adoption of the new Programme of Work (Pow) on Article 8j. This side event was organized by the IIFB and featured Ramiro Batzin and Lakpa Nuri Sherpa, both Co-chairs of the IIFB, Viviana Figueroa – who led negotiations on behalf of the IIFB on the SB8j and the PoW-, Paulo Estrada Añokazi and Laura Bermudez from MPC and Johannes Haas, from the BMZ Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany.
